Joseph Stalin was the Genearal Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviets Union Central Committee from 1922 until his death in 1953. In the years following Lenin's death in 1924, he rose to become the authoritarian leader of the Soviet Union.
Stalin conducted many activities for the Bolshevik party growing up in Georgia for 12 years, before the Russian Revolution of 1917. Afterwards, Stalin took military leader ship roles in the Russian Civil War and the Soviet-Polish War. Stalin grew very close to Lenin, who saw him as a loyal follower. His connections with Lenin helped him attain high positions in the new Soviet government, eventually becoming General Secretary in 1922. Lenin slowly began to desagree with Stalin's policies. But a stroke in 1922 sent Lenin into a semi-retirement before any action could be done against Stain. Lenin recommended Stalin's dismissal. However, after Lenin's death in 1924, Stalin suppressed the documentation of Lenin's recommendation to dismiss him. Stalin then made himself the authoritarian leader of the USSR, and dismissed the government.
